India to Roll Out E85 Fuel as Government Steps Up Efforts to Reduce Oil Imports
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is expected to formally launch the new fuel at an Indian Oil outlet in New Delhi. Initially, E85 will be made available at around 50 fuel stations across the country.
What Is E85 Fuel?
E85 is a high-ethanol fuel blend that contains approximately 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol. It follows the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol, which contains 20 per cent ethanol and is currently available across India’s retail fuel network.
Officials believe E85 can help lower carbon emissions and further strengthen India’s efforts to diversify its energy sources.
Why India Is Betting on Ethanol
India’s fuel demand has continued to rise, particularly in the two-wheeler segment, leading to increased crude oil imports. Ethanol blending is being promoted as a practical way to reduce dependence on foreign oil while creating additional demand for agricultural produce such as sugarcane, corn and rice.
Higher ethanol usage is also expected to benefit farmers by creating new markets for agricultural feedstocks and boosting rural incomes.
Alternative to Slow EV Adoption
While electric vehicles remain a key part of India’s long-term mobility strategy, adoption has been slower than expected due to high vehicle costs and limited charging infrastructure.
Policymakers see flex-fuel and hybrid-fuel vehicles as a faster solution that can work alongside electric mobility. Unlike EVs, ethanol-based vehicles require relatively limited infrastructure changes, making them easier to deploy at scale.
Automakers Prepare for the Shift
The government’s push toward higher ethanol blends is already influencing the automobile sector. Earlier this week, new E85-compatible models from Hero MotoCorp and Maruti Suzuki were showcased, signaling growing industry support for flex-fuel technology.
The government is also considering additional policy measures to encourage the adoption of vehicles capable of running on higher ethanol blends.
Concerns Over Mileage and Engine Performance
The launch of E85 comes at a time when some vehicle owners continue to raise concerns about ethanol-blended fuels. Users of older petrol vehicles have reported worries regarding fuel efficiency, mileage and long-term engine durability following the rollout of E20 petrol.
The government, however, maintains that ethanol blends offer several advantages, including lower emissions, smoother acceleration and improved ride quality. Authorities believe these benefits will become more pronounced as flex-fuel technology becomes more widespread.
A New Chapter in India’s Fuel Strategy
With petrol consumption continuing to grow and energy security becoming increasingly important, E85 represents another milestone in India’s effort to build a cleaner and more self-reliant fuel ecosystem. The success of the new blend will likely depend on fuel pricing, vehicle compatibility and consumer acceptance in the coming years.
