New Delhi, Apr 27: India has appointed senior politician and former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi as the next High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

He is expected to take up the assignment shortly, External Affairs Ministry said in a statement today.

The 75-year-old was earlier associated with Trinamool Congress (TMC) and shifted to the BJP in 2021.

Originally from the state of Gujarat, Trivedi was the Railway Minister in the UPA government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Prior to that, he held the portfolio of Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the Manmohan Singh government.

He was a member of Rajya Sabha when he resigned from TMC and joined BJP in 2021.

Earlier, he was a Member of Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2019, representing Barrackpore constituency of West Bengal.

Significantly, the appointment of the politician as India’s Envoy in Bangladesh comes months after the new government assumed office there following an unprecedented unrest and ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina government over a year back.
