New Delhi, May 12: The selection process for the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has begun, with a high-powered committee led by the Prime Minister meeting to discuss potential candidates. The current CBI Director Praveen Sood is set to complete his tenure on May 24, 2026, though an extension remains a possibility.

The committee also includes the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India, as part of the statutory selection mechanism for one of India’s most sensitive investigative posts.

Why The CBI Director Post Matters

The CBI Director heads India’s premier investigation agency, responsible for probing major corruption cases, financial frauds, and politically sensitive investigations.

The role is considered crucial because:

  • It oversees high-profile criminal and corruption investigations
  • It has authority over filing or closing charge sheets
  • It coordinates with global agencies as India’s Interpol nodal point
  • It ensures accountability of central government departments and PSUs

The position carries a fixed two-year tenure under law, designed to ensure autonomy and reduce political influence.

Top Frontrunners For CBI Chief

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has shortlisted senior IPS officers from the 1989–1992 batches, each with strong experience in vigilance, intelligence, and law enforcement roles.

Shatrujit Singh Kapoor (1990 batch, Haryana cadre)

  • Current role: Director General, ITBP
  • Experience: Earlier worked in the CBI and holds strong internal agency exposure
  • Strengths: Known for administrative experience in central armed forces leadership
  • Concerns: Has limited remaining service tenure and has faced controversy linked to an FIR in a constable suicide case

G.P. Singh (1991 batch, Assam-Meghalaya cadre)

  • Current role: Director General, CRPF
  • Previous roles: IG NIA, DGP Assam, Special DG Assam
  • Strengths: Extensive experience in counter-insurgency, policing, and election security operations
  • Reputation: Credited with improving security arrangements during sensitive electoral processes.

Apart from new appointments, the government is also reportedly considering extending the tenure of current chief Praveen Sood. Under existing provisions, extensions are possible to ensure continuity at the top of the agency.

Decision Expected After Committee Deliberations

The final decision will be based on recommendations of the selection panel after evaluating seniority, integrity records, investigative experience, and administrative capability of the shortlisted officers.

The CBI chief’s appointment is closely watched due to the agency’s role in politically sensitive investigations and high-value financial crime cases.
