New Delhi, May 15: Tata Electronics has signed a major partnership agreement with Dutch semiconductor equipment giant ASML, marking a significant step in India’s efforts to establish itself as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub.
The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on supporting Tata Electronics’ upcoming semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat. The collaboration is expected to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem by bringing advanced chip manufacturing technology and expertise into the country.
According to the joint announcement, ASML will provide its advanced lithography tools and semiconductor manufacturing solutions for Tata Electronics’ planned 300 mm semiconductor fabrication plant.
The Dholera facility is set to become India’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication plant and is expected to produce around 50,000 wafers per month. The fab will manufacture analog and logic integrated circuit chips using technologies ranging from 28nm to 110nm.
The project forms a major part of the Indian government’s India Semiconductor Mission, which aims to position India as a strategic global player in semiconductor manufacturing.
ASML is considered one of the world’s most critical semiconductor technology companies because it is the only manufacturer globally producing Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines.
These highly advanced machines are essential for manufacturing cutting-edge chips used in:
Major global chipmakers such as TSMC, Samsung Electronics, and Intel rely heavily on ASML’s equipment for advanced semiconductor production.
The partnership therefore gives India access to one of the most strategically important technologies in the global electronics supply chain.
Beyond equipment deployment, Tata Electronics and ASML will also collaborate on:
The partnership is expected to help India reduce dependence on imported chips while building long-term domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The Dholera semiconductor project is estimated to involve an investment of around $11 billion and is being developed in partnership with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) of Taiwan.
Through this collaboration, Tata Electronics gains access to multiple semiconductor process technologies including 28nm, 40nm, 55nm, 90nm, and 110nm nodes.
The chips manufactured at the facility are expected to serve industries including automotive, mobile devices, AI, consumer electronics, and industrial technology markets globally.
The Tata-ASML partnership is being viewed as a major milestone in India’s semiconductor journey. Access to ASML’s advanced lithography ecosystem could significantly accelerate India’s ability to compete in the global semiconductor market and attract future investments into the country’s growing electronics manufacturing sector.
