New Delhi, June 11: Government-run Oil India Limited (OIL) has signed a collaboration framework with Canada’s Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC) to advance research and development in carbon capture, geothermal energy, and other clean energy technologies.
Under the framework, PTRC and OIL will jointly work across several strategic areas — carbon dioxide capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) including permanent geological sequestration and mineralisation; enhanced oil recovery techniques designed to reduce environmental impact; and identification of geothermal energy projects of mutual benefit.
The collaboration will also involve research initiatives linked to mc2+, a startup platform operating under India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, bringing startup-driven innovation into the partnership alongside institutional research.
The agreement builds on the broader India-Canada energy relationship, which has gained significant momentum in 2026 following commercial deals worth over Rs 37,000 crore announced during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to New Delhi in March.
For Oil India, a company whose core business remains hydrocarbon exploration, the PTRC partnership signals a deliberate push towards building capabilities in low-carbon technologies as India navigates its energy transition. (BVI)
