New Vehicles May Be Mandated to Communicate With Each Other From October 2028

New Delhi, 04th The government has put forward plans to make vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology compulsory in new vehicles, aiming to boost road safety and push forward connected mobility across the country.

Under a draft notification released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, vehicles built from October 2028 onward could be required to come equipped with V2V communication systems. The notification lays out how this road safety initiative — first announced by the government earlier this year — will be rolled out in phases.

The draft amendment to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 specifies that category L, M, and N vehicles manufactured on or after October 1, 2028 would need to have V2V communication systems that comply with the AIS-230 standard.

This system has been designed with built-in features that define the minimum technical, functional, performance, environmental, and security benchmarks that V2V communication systems must meet when installed in vehicles running on Indian roads.
