Govt Urges Judicious Power Use As Heatwaves Push Electricity Demand To Record High
New Delhi, May 22: Ministry of Power has appealed to citizens to use electricity carefully and responsibly as rising temperatures and severe heatwaves continue to drive record-breaking power consumption across the country.
India’s peak electricity demand crossed an all-time high of 270.82 gigawatts (GW) on May 21, reflecting a sharp rise in cooling requirements, particularly from air conditioners during the ongoing summer season.
Power Demand Hits Fresh Record Every Day
According to government data, daytime peak electricity demand has consistently increased over the past four days. Demand stood at 257.37 GW on May 18, rose to 260.45 GW on May 19, climbed further to 265.44 GW on May 20, and finally touched a record 270.82 GW on May 21.
Most of these peak demand levels were recorded between 2 pm and 4 pm, coinciding with intense daytime heat and maximum solar-hour electricity usage.
Government Appeals For Responsible Electricity Consumption
In a social media message, the Power Ministry said that while the country is prepared to meet electricity requirements, consumers should still avoid unnecessary power consumption during peak summer conditions.
The ministry stressed that responsible electricity use can help maintain grid stability and reduce pressure on the power infrastructure during periods of exceptionally high demand.
Heatwaves Driving Cooling Demand Across India
The ongoing heatwave conditions across several states have significantly increased dependence on cooling appliances such as air conditioners, coolers and fans. Urban centres in particular have witnessed a sharp rise in residential and commercial electricity usage.
Energy experts believe cooling demand is becoming one of the biggest contributors to India’s summer power consumption growth, especially during prolonged heatwave periods linked to climate variability.
Grid Preparedness Under Focus
Despite the record demand, the government stated that power supply systems remain prepared to handle the increased load. Authorities continue to monitor electricity generation, transmission and distribution networks closely to avoid outages and shortages.
India has been rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity, especially solar power, which has helped support daytime electricity demand during peak summer hours.
