New Delhi 28 April: In a major boost to India’s indigenous defence capabilities, DRDO and Tata Advanced Systems Limited have jointly developed next-generation Advanced Armoured Platforms, including the tracked and wheeled variants of VIKRAM VT-21, along with a state-of-the-art 30mm Unmanned Turret.

The platform has been designed by the Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (VRDE) and developed and manufactured by Tata Advanced Systems with DRDO’s support. Notably, the prototypes were completed in a record time of under 30 months, showcasing rapid progress in defence manufacturing.

The prototypes were officially flagged off on April 25, 2026, at the Vehicle Dynamic Test Track at the National Centre for Automotive Testing (NCAT), in the presence of senior DRDO leadership, including Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of DRDO and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D.

Advanced Combat Capabilities

The VIKRAM VT-21 platform represents a new generation of armoured vehicles designed for enhanced mobility, survivability, and modularity. It integrates advanced automotive systems and supports next-generation combat features, including potential crewless operations.

A key highlight is the 30mm Unmanned Turret, co-developed by Tata Advanced Systems and DRDO. The turret enables precise targeting and improved firepower while allowing operators to remain safely inside the vehicle hull, significantly enhancing battlefield protection.

Successful Trials and Future Roadmap

Prior to the flag-off, both the armoured platform and turret underwent rigorous mobility trials at NCAT, demonstrating strong performance across diverse terrains. Additional trials are expected in the coming months to further validate operational readiness.

Strengthening Indigenous Defence Ecosystem

The programme underscores the growing collaboration between DRDO and private industry under India’s defence indigenisation push. Tata Advanced Systems, acting as a strategic partner, continues to play a key role in delivering advanced land mobility and combat solutions for the Indian Armed Forces.

This development aligns with India’s broader goal of enhancing self-reliance in defence technology, while building future-ready, mobile, and survivable combat systems.
