New Delhi, Sep 1: After nearly 15 years of being at the helm, Tim Cook has stepped down as Chief Executive of Apple, handing over leadership of the technology giant to John Ternus.
Cook, who has spent almost three decades at Apple, will remain with the company as executive chairman.
Cook became CEO in 2011, just weeks before co-founder Steve Jobs died from pancreatic cancer.
His departure from the chief executive role marks the end of an era during which Apple grew into one of the world’s most valuable companies.
In a farewell message on X, Cook thanked Apple employees and the wider community while signalling his transition to a new role.
“Sending lots of love to the Apple community on my last day as CEO. My title changes tomorrow, but the love I have for the Apple community never will. Thank you for being a constant source of inspiration. My gratitude is endless, and I’m excited for the next chapter!” Cook said.
Ternus takes charge as Apple’s CEO from September 1, succeeding Cook at the top of the company. According to the supplied report, he becomes only the second person to lead Apple as CEO after Jobs during this period of the company’s history. Cook, meanwhile, will continue to have a leadership role at Apple as executive chairman rather than leaving the company altogether.
The transition comes as Apple’s market capitalisation crossed $4.5 trillion on Monday, underscoring the scale of the company Cook leaves in the hands of his successor after almost 15 years as chief executive. (BVI)
