India’s unemployment rate stood at 5% in August: Govt Data

New Delhi, Sep 15: India’s unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above stood at 5 per cent in August, government data showed on Tuesday.

The data showed a little decline in rural unemployment against the previous month, while the urban unemployment rate rose marginally.

Rural unemployment fell to 4.1 per cent in August from 4.5 per cent in July.

Urban unemployment, meanwhile, edged up to 6.8 per cent from 6.7 per cent during the same period.

On a year-on-year basis, the overall unemployment rate was broadly unchanged in August.

The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for people aged 15 years and above rose marginally to 55.6 per cent in August from 55.4 per cent in July.

Rural LFPR increased to 58.2 per cent from 58 per cent, while urban LFPR remained unchanged at 50.4 per cent.

Compared with August 2025, overall LFPR increased by 0.6 percentage point to 55.6 per cent from 55 per cent. Rural LFPR rose by 1.2 percentage points to 58.2 per cent from 57 per cent, while urban LFPR declined by 0.5 percentage point to 50.4 per cent from 50.9 per cent. (BVI)
