19,000 residential complexes have installed rooftop solar systems
New Delhi, Sept 15: More than 19,000 residential communities across India have installed rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, according to the latest government data.
The installations have a cumulative capacity of more than 278 MW.
Solar power generated at these sites is being used for common-area requirements such as lifts, lighting, water pumps, security systems and sewage treatment plants.
The Centre has released Rs 422 crore in financial assistance to resident welfare associations (RWAs) to support these installations.
Gujarat has emerged as the leading state, with more than 9,000 housing societies installing solar capacity.
Maharashtra follows with over 7,500 residential communities adopting rooftop solar.
Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are also seeing increasing adoption of community rooftop solar.
At the city level, Ahmedabad, Pune, Vadodara, Nashik and Surat are among the five cities with the highest number of rooftop solar installations across housing societies.
Under the scheme, eligible RWAs and group housing societies receive central financial assistance of Rs 18,000 per kW for community-scale rooftop solar projects.
Housing societies in special-category states and Union Territories are eligible for higher assistance of Rs 19,800 per kW. These include the North-Eastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
Rooftop Solar Installations have reached 47.8 Lakh
Launched in February 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims to bring rooftop solar to one crore Indian households by March 2027.
Including individual households, the total number of rooftop solar installations has reached 47.8 lakh, representing an installed capacity of 16.8 GW and benefiting nearly 56.9 lakh families. (BVI)
