SAIRANG (MIZORAM), Dec 15 (BVI): In a historic development for Mizoram, the North Eastern state has started receiving vehicles by train, three months after it got its first railway track.

Sairang Railway Station in the state handled its first-ever direct inward automobile rake, carrying 119 Maruti cars from Changsari near Guwahati, the capital of Assam.

This comes three months after the state was fully integrated with the country’s rail network with the inauguration of Bairabi-Sairang Railway line on September 13.

It is a 51.38 km long broad-gauge line, considered an engineering marvel due to the extremely challenging hilly terrain it traverses.

The freight movement on this section started on September 14, 2025, carrying 21 cement wagons from Assam to Aizawl. Since then, the route has transported essential goods like cement, construction materials, automobiles, sand, and stone chips.

Between September 17 and December 12, 2025, a total of 17 rakes were handled, according to Railway officials.

However, this is the first transportation of vehicles on this section.

According to Railway officials, all three passenger trains are running with high occupancy.

The Sairang-Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express at 147 per cent, the Sairang-Guwahati Mizoram Express at 115 per cent, and the Sairang-Kolkata Express at 139 per cent.

Passengers find the trains convenient, pocket friendly and save significant time. Rail connectivity has improved the ease of travel to major cities and economic hubs. It has also enhanced access to education and medical facilities in nearby states.

This achievement reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to expanding connectivity, supporting regional development, and fostering inclusive growth across the country. (BVI)
