New Delhi, Aug 6 (BVI) As threatened by him, US President Donald Trump today announced 25% additional tariffs on Indian goods, raising the total to 50% and evoking a sharp reaction from New Delhi which termed the decision as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable”.

Trump said the 25% tariffs will be in addition to the existing ones because India continues to buy oil from Russia.

With this decision, the tariffs on Indian imports to the US would go up to 50% as Trump has already imposed 25% tariffs recently.

Reacting to the decision, External Affairs Ministry in New Delhi said it was “extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest.”

External Affairs Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal, in a statement, noted that the United States “has in recent days targeted India’s oil imports from Russia” even as “We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India.”

He added, “We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.”

The spokesman underlined that “India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests.” (BVI)
