New Delhi, June 14: Against the backdrop of a series of attacks by the US military on ships carrying Indians, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump will meet in Nice city of France on June 17, during which a proposed trade deal is expected to be the key agenda.

The two leaders will have a meeting at 6:15 pm (IST) on June 17 on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, a senior White House official confirmed.

He said the ongoing negotiations related to a proposed trade deal between India and the US will be a key issue of discussion.

Negotiators of the two countries have held a numbe of rounds of discussions to reach an Interim agreement on trade cooperation, and reported progress after the last round held in New Delhi earlier this month.

Modi and Trump will be participating in the G7 Summit on June 16-17.

It is expected that Modi and Trump would lend a leadership-level push to the negotiations so that the agreement can be signed at the earliest.

This will be their first face-to-face meeting since Modi’s visit to the US in February 2025.

The meeting will be more significant considering the recent series of attacks by the US Navy on oil tankers, with Indians on board, near the Coast of Oman.

These attacks, in one of which 3 Indians were killed, have caused a huge outrage among the Indians, particularly because the US has been unapologetic about these wilful actions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during a telephonic call with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, has defended these attacks, saying America would not tolerate violations of its naval blockade in Hormuz. (BVI)
