New Delhi, June 02: Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has inaugurated a new AI-powered fragrance innovation hub in Mumbai, further strengthening India’s role as a major research and development centre for global consumer goods giant Unilever.

The newly launched Unilever Fragrance Hub (UFH) has been set up at the IIT Bombay campus and is designed to combine artificial intelligence, consumer insights, and advanced science to accelerate fragrance creation and product innovation across multiple categories.

India Becomes Key Global Fragrance Innovation Centre

The Mumbai facility is reportedly Unilever’s third global fragrance hub after similar centres in the United Kingdom and the United States.

The initiative forms part of Unilever’s larger €100 million global programme focused on building digitally enabled in-house fragrance development capabilities.

According to HUL, the new centre highlights the company’s long-term commitment to India as both a high-growth market and a global innovation hub.

AI And Consumer Insights To Drive Faster Product Development

The fragrance hub will reportedly use:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Real-time evaluation systems
  • Advanced fragrance compounding technologies
  • Consumer behaviour insights

to create and refine fragrances more efficiently.

The company said the technology-driven setup will help accelerate innovation, improve product experience, and support premiumisation across categories such as:

  • Shampoos
  • Body washes
  • Deodorants
  • Laundry products

Officials believe the new hub will allow faster responses to changing consumer preferences and local market trends.

Collaboration With IIT Bombay

HUL stated that the facility’s location inside the IIT Bombay campus will create opportunities for collaboration with academic researchers and technology experts.

The partnership is expected to support innovation in:

  • Science and technology
  • Data analysis
  • AI-driven fragrance development
  • Digital product evaluation

The company sees this collaboration as an important step toward building future-ready consumer products.

HUL Says Fragrance Is Important For Consumer Experience

Company executives highlighted that fragrance plays a major role in shaping consumer preference, product desirability, and premium brand positioning.

Vivek Sirohi, Head of Unilever Fragrance House, reportedly stated that India’s diverse consumer base offers valuable insights that can help create fragrances with global appeal.

The company also noted that the India lab is a fully integrated fragrance creation and evaluation centre capable of collaborating seamlessly with other global Unilever fragrance hubs.

Focus On Premiumisation And Global Growth

The move comes at a time when consumer goods companies are increasingly focusing on premium products and personalised consumer experiences.

HUL believes the new AI-powered facility will help strengthen innovation capabilities while also improving self-reliance in fragrance design and testing.

Industry experts say fragrance has become a critical element in the fast-moving consumer goods sector because it directly influences consumer loyalty and purchasing behaviour.

India’s Growing Importance In Global R&D

The launch of the fragrance hub further highlights India’s growing importance in global research and development operations for multinational companies.

With strong consumer demand, a large talent pool, and expanding technology infrastructure, India is increasingly emerging as a strategic centre for innovation across industries.

The new Mumbai fragrance hub is expected to play a major role in helping Unilever design products that cater both to Indian consumers and international markets.
