New Delhi, May 28: “Puffer-fishing” is a recently viral term used to describe a dating behaviour where one partner withdraws emotionally or physically when a relationship starts becoming serious or emotionally intense. Though the behaviour itself is not new, the label has gained attention for explaining avoidant patterns in modern relationships.
Puffer-fishing refers to a pattern where a person becomes distant, stops communicating, or even disappears when emotional closeness increases in a relationship. This often includes ghosting, sudden breakups, or reduced engagement once things start feeling real or committed.
The term is inspired by the puffer fish, which inflates and becomes defensive when it senses danger. Similarly, individuals exhibiting this behaviour “shut down” emotionally as a protective response to perceived vulnerability or emotional risk.
Experts suggest that puffer-fishing is often linked to fear of emotional intimacy and vulnerability. It may stem from avoidant attachment styles or past experiences that make closeness feel overwhelming. In many cases, individuals are not indifferent but struggle to manage emotional intensity.
When one partner consistently withdraws, it can create confusion, anxiety, and emotional imbalance in the relationship. Frequent emotional distancing and lack of communication may lead to insecurity in the other partner and eventual relationship breakdown.
Experts recommend building self-awareness and identifying emotional triggers that lead to withdrawal. Learning to sit with discomfort, communicating feelings instead of disappearing, and working on emotional regulation can help create healthier relationship patterns. Therapy and self-reflection can also support long-term change.
While “puffer-fishing” may be a new label, the behaviour it describes is rooted in long-standing emotional avoidance patterns. Recognizing and addressing these tendencies can help individuals build more secure and stable relationships.
