What Is Anthropic Mythos? And Why FM Nirmala Sitharaman Worried About It
New Delhi, April 27: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has flagged serious concerns over a new artificial intelligence system called Mythos, describing its potential cyber threat as comparable to the scale of warfare. Her remarks have drawn attention to how advanced AI is reshaping global cybersecurity risks.
What Is Anthropic Mythos?
Mythos is an advanced AI cybersecurity model developed by Anthropic under its Project Glasswing initiative. Unlike regular AI tools used for writing or coding, Mythos is specifically designed for cybersecurity operations such as identifying vulnerabilities, simulating cyberattacks, and strengthening digital defence systems.
How Does It Work?
The model can detect hidden weaknesses in software and networks, stimulate how cyberattacks might occur, analyse threat patterns in real time, help organisations fix issues before hackers exploit them and in simple terms, it acts like an automated cyber expert that can scan and secure systems at extremely high speed.
Why Has It Triggered Concern?
Despite its defensive purpose, Mythos has raised alarms because of its dual-use nature. The same capabilities that help protect systems can also be used to attack them if misused.
Reports suggest the AI can identify zero-day vulnerabilities (unknown security flaws), exploit these weaknesses step-by-step and able even non-experts to carry out sophisticated cyberattacks. This means tools once limited to elite hackers could become widely accessible.
Scale of the Threat
According to early testing, Mythos has reportedly discovered vulnerabilities across major operating systems, web browsers, and widely used software tools. Many of these flaws were previously undetected for years.
This ability to both find and exploit weaknesses is why policymakers see it as a potential large-scale threat to digital infrastructure.
India has rapidly expanded its digital ecosystem from banking and payments to governance services. This makes the country more vulnerable to cyber risks.
Nirmala Sitharaman warned that such AI-driven threats could impact entire digital networks, making cybersecurity a national priority.

Why This Matters Globally
Mythos highlights a major shift: AI is no longer just about productivity tools—it is becoming central to cybersecurity and digital warfare.
The concern is not just about one model, but the broader trend where AI can:
- Strengthen national defence systems
- Or be weaponised to disrupt economies and infrastructure
Anthropic’s Mythos represents both an opportunity and a risk. While it can significantly improve cybersecurity, its potential misuse has raised alarms worldwide. The debate underscores a new reality protecting digital systems may now be as critical as safeguarding physical borders.
