LUCKNOW: A quiet revolution in the dairy sector is reshaping the rural economy of Uttar Pradesh. Under the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission, over 55,000 women across six districts have transitioned from traditional homemakers to successful dairy entrepreneurs, marking a milestone in Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s women empowerment initiative.

The impact is most visible in the Terai region, where organized milk production has turned a side-activity into a structured, high-income business model.

The “Srijani” Transformation: Districts Involved

The mission has focused its efforts on six key districts, providing women with the infrastructure for milk collection, marketing, and veterinary support:

  1. Bareilly

  2. Lakhimpur Kheri

  3. Pilibhit

  4. Shahjahanpur

  5. Sitapur

  6. Rampurt

From ₹2,000 to ₹60,000: A Case Study in Growth

The story of Ramguni, a resident of Sirai Cha village in Lakhimpur Kheri, has become the face of this movement.

  • Before: Ramguni earned a mere ₹2,000–₹3,000 per month through unorganized labor.

  • After: By joining the Srijani Milk Producer Organization and leveraging government training and market linkages, her monthly income has surged to ₹60,000.

How the Model Works

The success of the “Srijani” initiative rests on three pillars of support provided by the State Rural Livelihood Mission:

  • Organized Collection: Shifting away from local middlemen, women now use a centralized system that ensures fair pricing and direct digital payments.

  • Training & Management: Women are taught modern dairy management, including cattle nutrition and financial literacy, turning them into independent business owners.

  • Veterinary Services: Improved access to healthcare for livestock has led to better animal health and a consistent rise in milk yields.

The Socio-Economic Impact

Beyond the numbers, the mission is fostering a new generation of rural leadership. Through Self-Help Groups (SHGs), women in these six districts are not only contributing to their household income but are also taking charge of local logistics and community management.

As the Terai region sets a benchmark, the state government plans to scale the “Srijani” model to other districts, aiming to make Uttar Pradesh a leader in indigenous, women-led dairy production by 2027.
