Foodgrain transported to Kashmir valley by rail for first time

Srinagar, Dec 23 (BVI) In yet another landmark development, the Indian Railways has transported foodgrain freight by train to Kashmir for the first time.

The first-ever Food Corporation of India (FCI)-sponsored foodgrain freight rake delivered the cargo at the Anantnag Goods Terminal.

The freight train from Ajitwal Station in Punjab carried approximately 1,384 tonnes of essential foodgrains loaded across 21 BCN wagons.
This journey marked the official commencement of direct sponsored foodgrain movement via rail to the Kashmir Valley.
By establishing this rail link for bulk food transport, the FCI and Indian Railways are ensuring a more robust and reliable supply chain that bypasses the traditional challenges associated with mountainous road transport.
The transportration of this rake is particularly timely as Kashmir Valley faces harsh winter weather conditions, which often lead to the closure of the National Highway due to snow and landslides.
Therefore, this rail movement provides a vital lifeline to the people of Kashmir. (BVI)
