New Delhi, Dec 1 (BVI): From January 1, 2026, non-AC Sleeper Class rail travelers in select few trains in Chennai Division can avail of ready-to-use bedrolls ‘On-Demand – On-Payment’ basis.

“We have started the services in Southern Railway as a pilot project and this facility will be extended to other zones in phases,” said a senior Railway Ministry official.

As of now, Sleeper Class passengers do not have access to organized provision of bedrolls during their journeys and this facility is exclusively available to AC Sleeper Classes.

The Bedroll facilities will be available in Nilgiri Superfast Express, Mangalore Superfast Express, Mannargudi Express, Tiruchendur Superfast Express, Palghat Express, Silambu Superfast Express, Tambaram–Nagercoil Superfast Express,

Trivandrum Superfast Express, Alleppey Superfast Express and Mangalore Express.

A passenger will have to pay Rs 50 for one bedsheet, one pillow and one pillow cover, Rs 30 for one pillow and one pillow cover and Rs 20 for one bed sheet.

“We have kept the rate affordable so that ready-to-use bedrolls are available on demand by passengers to enhance comfort for Sleeper Class passengers,” said the official.

There will be an additional revenue of about Rs 28,27,653 generated annually for Indian Railways under the initiative.

A licensee will manage the entire process, including procurement, mechanized washing, packing, loading, distribution, and storage of bedrolls. (BVI)
